Between fall’s arrival, the return of Beetlejuice and both Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos on the horizon, it’s safe to say that we’re approaching peak spooky season.

So, it seems only fitting that an eerie new design trend has hit the big time: whimsigoth. What is whimsigoth, you may ask? Right this way, boo.

Blending the words 'whimsical' and 'gothic,' whimsigoth is a fashion and interior decor trend that blends whimsical charm and eerie gothic vibes, creating a unique aesthetic that combines the gothic style's dark, mysterious elements with playful, magical, and fantastical touches.

According to Architectural Digest, “whimsigothic” was coined by designer Evan Collins in 2020 and has gained significant traction with both design enthusiasts and experts. Incorporating maximalism, unexpected pops of color like magenta, burnt orange and rich blue and lush patterns and textures, whimsigoth feels cozy and magical, instead of all dark and edgy.

We’re seeing the whimsigoth trend take hold in hotels as well. Il Capri, perched on the Capri coastline, recently underwent a renovation where the owners leaned in to the building's neo-gothic interior by adding pointed headboards, intricately patterned bed linen and long drapes. The soon-to-open The Twenty Two in New York features rich palettes, sumptuous drapery, patterned papers and lots of decorative elements.

If this bewitching aesthetic is speaking to you, here are some other hotels serving this spooky season:
