Like destination weddings and safaris, boutique hotels are more popular than ever.

With usually between 10 and 100 rooms, these smaller hotels prioritize distinct design, unique features and more luxury services. According to a recent report, the global boutique hotels market was valued at almost $10 billion in 2023, and is projected to reach $18 billion by 2033.

One of the main factors driving interest is the notable shift in guests wanting curated and distinctive travel experiences. With their own appeal and personalized services, boutique hotels are well-positioned to meet the demands of guests who are seeking authenticity and local immersion.

“Boutique hotels bring a genuine sense of place and community to the hospitality space, which travelers are increasingly seeking from their accommodations," shares Erin Lindsey, VP, Brand and Community of Bunkhouse Hotels. "Not being a big box hotel brand allows us to curate our service, amenities and experiences to the cities and neighborhoods where we are growing.

Turns out the appeal of a smaller stay isn't only for leisure travel. Business travelers are driving the increase as well, with boutique hotels serving as a welcome change from conventional corporate lodging, with spaces designed for work and activities emphasizing great service and meticulous attention to detail.

"Boutique hotels are vital because they offer modern travelers a unique blend of authenticity, creativity, and cultural connection," says Regina Pérez, Director of PR for Mexico City-based Grupo Habita. "We prioritize amenities and curated experiences, ensuring our guests feel both comfortable and rejuvenated. This attention to detail and local culture creates an unparalleled experience that resonates with today’s travelers."

While there are certainly lots to choose from, here are a few small-but-mighty hotels we can't wait to visit:
