Here's why shopping bags are the "it" bag right now.

Although the animal bean bag chairs at Bottega Veneta’s Spring/Summer 2025 were the talk of Milan Fashion Week, it was something a little more subtle that left fashionistas buzzing.

Accompanying models down the runway was Bottega’s take on the plastic grocery bag. But, this one was crafted of nylon silk and leather. Reminiscent of the paper shopping bag trend that dominated social media last year, shopping bags of high-end fashion labels have become on-trend items for everything from carrying lunches to appearing in TikTok backgrounds.

Shopping bags have become the new it-bags, with no one embodying the theme better than Kim K. herself, who showed up to Balenciaga’s 2024 fashion show carrying a shopping bag emblazoned with the name Erewhon, the upscale L.A. supermarket chain popular with celebs and now known for its $19 smoothies.

In February, Trader Joe's released a mini-tote that caused an absolute frenzy, which, according to the BBC, are the “it” bag in Japan. “The American grocer has a strange level of star power in Japan, where anyone who's anyone has a Trader Joe’s tote bag slung over their shoulder.”

While this surprising trend might raise eyebrows, it turns out that people from all walks of life are actually really into shopping bags—real, actual shopping bags─demonstrating a real attraction for what was once considered an everyday necessity for carrying the fruits of a shopping trip.
