This Lake Arrowhead Rental Is Giving Us Serious Cabin Fever
If you can’t escape to the mountains this year, here’s how to get that cozy cabin feel at home.
When we discovered Mile End House, a newly renovated cabin in Lake Arrowhead, CA, we developed a serious case of cabin fever.
Just a hop, skip and jump from Los Angeles, Lake Arrowhead is a stunningly beautiful, cozy and quaint mountain paradise nestled in the mountains of the San Bernardino National Forest.
Available for rent year-round, Mile End House is a redesigned 1970s cabin that combines the warmth of a classic mountain home with mid-century style and stylish touches throughout. We asked owner Raluca State, PR-exec by day, design genius by night, for her tips on how to recreate Mile End House’s impossibly chic mountain vibe at home.
“We bought our cabin in Lake Arrowhead in early 2022 and spent six months working on renovations and redesign with a vision for a moody, mid-century, “true” mountain look and feel. We say “true mountain” because we watched a lot of older cabins in the area get bathed in white paint and the coastal tones you find more often down the mountain and by the beach in Southern California and we wanted the opposite. We wanted to play off the canopy of trees that surround our little spot and the endless forest views from every angle and wanted the interiors to reflect that earthy, cozy, moody feeling.

Otti Hand-Knotted Wool Rug
This oversized rug from Nina Freudenberger’s collection for Lulu & Georgia anchored the living room and was the starting point for its design. The tones felt very much in line with the cabin’s natural bones and wood-covered walls but also felt elevated and contemporary. The entry way has the matching small rug as an accent.

HAY Rice Paper Shade
Similarly, the HAY Rice Paper Shade that sits above the dining room table was one of the first pieces we knew we wanted in the space. Yes, these lights have become a bit ubiquitous, but with good reason…it’s a much-loved design staple that adds an eye-catching element to the room by day and a really beautiful glow in the evenings. Someday soon, we will upgrade to the Noguchi version.

Canvas Prints
We recently added these pieces from Upton to both bedrooms and we love them. It took us a while to decide on art for the home and we wanted a mix of high, low and memorable. These fit all three bills. We have the Hemera and the Amberson hanging in the primary bedroom and the Henge in the secondary bedroom. We really wanted the design in both bedrooms to complement the other without feeling like carbon copies and these pieces do that perfectly.

D32 Tabletop Bluetooth Speaker
This Edifier Bluetooth speaker is one of our favorite things in the cabin. It has a vintage, cabin-appropriate look but delivers great sound and easy connectability.
Edifier, $200
Playlist In Black Art Print
With our soaring, A-frame style ceilings, we had a LOT of wall space to fill in the living room over the couch. The previous owners had a gallery wall of paintings and prints there but we wanted one big, statement-making piece and we found it with this wood-framed oversized Playlist piece. You can customize it with your own list of songs or order theirs as is, which we did. It’s a nice nod to the cabin’s history which has deep roots in music and the music industry and it’s a great conversation-piece.
Sugarboo & Co., $600
Round Hanging Mirror
I really love the round mirror we hung in the kitchen. We wanted the space’s stunning deep, deep green color palette to stand on its own but were left with a big empty space on this one section of the wall and it felt a little out of the ordinary and cool to do a mirror there instead of an open shelf or the vintage framed art that you see so often these days.

Contemporary Number Plate
This was one of the first things I ordered for the cabin, long before we could see the finish line and it was an absolute joy to hang it by the front door once we were ready to open it up to guests. We ordered it custom made from the most lovely makers in England and consider it a beautiful symbol of the home and the care we’ve put into it…visible right from the start.
