As the end of the month approaches, we’re getting our ofrendas ready as we look forward to Día de Muertos.
Also known as Day of the Dead, this lively holiday, celebrated mostly in Mexico, is considered a joyful yet sentimental time when people remember their ancestors and honor their memory.
The tradition, rooted in native Mexican belief, sees families gather in cemeteries to welcome the souls as they return for their annual visit. At home, altars, known as ofrendas, overflow with traditional elements for the season such as marigolds, candles, papel picado and Calaveras, as well as photographs, mementos and favorite items used by the departed.
